Earth Day Assemblies and Events

  • April Earth Day Assembly

Every April, the Greenacres staff green team holds an Earth Day Assembly. The assembly highlights all of the great things that our kids and staff are doing to make our school more sustainable. At the assembly, we thank the kids and staff for the fantastic job they are doing!

During Earth Week Greenacres holds programs during and after school to emphasize what we can do to live more sustainably.

Last year, the focus of the assembly was endangered species. Students were given seeds to bring home so that they could grow bee-friendly flowers. Students also used compost from our food scraps program to grow beans.

Another year, we brought in a Mandala that is travelling around the country. It was made from plastic bags to promote the use of reusable bags. As each child weaved a plastic bag into the mandala, they made a pledge to use reusable bags when shopping with their families. The mandala was adorned with placards describing the issues surrounding excessive plastic use and how it is harming our earth's ecosystems.

In the past, we brought a worm composting bin to the school so that the kids could see the composting process up close. They fed the worms and got to see how the food was transformed into compost right. We have also done recycled art. The kids used all kinds of leftover items and “upcycled” them into beautiful art!
