    The Sandwich Swap

By Her Majesty Queen Rania Alabdullah

    Sandwich Swap

    Dear Heathcote Family,

Of all the ways that we choose books we think that the front cover and a friend's recommendation is what we rely on the most.  Of course you should never judge a book by its cover, but first impressions count.  The front cover of this month's book, The Sandwich Swap, shows two happy little girls who look like they would fit right in here at Heathcote.  What really stands out however, is the author’s name; Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah.  We thought, “Why would a queen be writing picture book?”  It turns out that Her Majesty is very interested in helping children all around the world understand and appreciate one another’s differences. Although cultural differences may make us different they can bring us together when we take the time to learn from one another.

In The Sandwich Swap, two young girls gain a greater appreciation for one another's culture by sharing their sandwiches.  In the beginning, Salma and Lily's differences are highlighted through the lunches that they eat and while busily enjoying their own lunch, the girls mistakenly judge each other's.  The lesson they eventually learn is that one should not jump to conclusions when it comes to something new or different.  Through a series of mishaps and misunderstandings, the girls learn how our differences can sometimes bring us closer together. Be sure to share the author’s note with your class.

    Enjoy!
