Handwriting in First Grade

  • In first grade, we use the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting program. First grade is a time of transition as we learn correct formation of lowercase letters and teach the children to use capital letters only when beginning a sentence or writing a proper noun. Proper letter formation is essential to developing automaticity in writing. When students can form their letters automatically, they are able to focus their writing efforts on communicating their ideas.
