        Primary Math

Quaker Ridge classrooms use a program called "Primary Math" to teach our math curriculum.  Students work with a textbook, a workbook, and an extra practice book.  We have a wide variety of additional materials for reinforcement and enrichment as needed.  Grade 3 units are on Numbers to 10,000, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, and Data Analysis. We are also learning to count in multiples.  There is an expectation that your child will leave third grade with a strong number sense and have facts memorized. We are using lots of manipulatives to explore concepts like place value. We work from concrete to pictorial to abstract so that children will understand math concepts.  The program is noted for its depth and breadth.

        Place Value
We start learning about ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands.  Large and small number circles and number strips help us explore expanded numbers and compact or standard form. It's fun to use magnetic boards and dry erase markers too!

Math Websites - Below are many interesting websites for you to use.  Sometimes you will have a specific assignment to use a particular website in class or for homework.  If you finish a math assignment for homework and have more time to practice math skills and explore math interests, you are free to explore these sites.  Some are good for practice and review, while others can enhance critical and creative problem solving skills. Enjoy!

        Division -

The division algorithm is a relatively complex process for students since it requires understanding of all four operations, with constant attention to place value. We spend many days using discs and place value charts to represent the numbers so that students thoroughly understand the process.

Try to avoid helping them the way we learned it as a child, even though it may seem easier. If your child is still struggling, please know that I am working on it with them in class. I will also provide opportunities for enrichment for those students that are ready to move on. However, they need to be able to explain what the numbers represents.
Please watch this tutorial on teaching division before working with your child.

        TIPS:
These questions will help guide you through the steps of long division.
#1.  How many tens/ones in each group?
#2. How many did I distribute?
        #3. How many are left?

        Steps for Division
        1. Divide
        2. Multiply
        3. Subtract
        4. Bring down
        5. Repeat

Another way to remember these steps is to say
        Daddy
        Mommy
        Sister
        Brother
