5th Grade MathThe District’s elementary math curriculum, based on New York’s Common Core State Standards, is delivered through the text book series, Primary Mathematics. The program's focus is designed to equip students with sound concept development, critical thinking and efficient problem-solving skills, meeting the needs of a range of learners, from those who need more support to those who need a more rigorous level of challenge.
In grade five, students learn:
- numbers and place values to 1,000,000,000
- multiplying and dividing by powers of ten
- factors and multiples
- division with two- and three-digit numbers
- fractions - comparing, fractions of a set, adding and subtracting with unlike denominator, multiplying and dividing
- area and perimeter of regular and irregular shapes
- angles
- percentage
- volume of rectangular prismsLearning About Volume of Rectangular PrismsStudents created models to learn about the volume of a rectangular solid. From these models, students investigated the concept of formula to determine the volume.
