We are a part of a Family CommunityWe are a culturally diverse group of people. Our families come from all over the globe. We talked to our families and studied maps and the globe to find out where our ancestors were from.
Families Have Needs and WantsThe focus of the Needs and Wants part of the first grade Families curriculum, is directed toward the ways that diverse families and communities around the world meet specific needs and wants.
All families around the world have basic needs such as food, water, shelter, health, love, care, and safety. Families depend on one another and their communities to meet their needs.
1-L Helps Communities Around the GlobeStudents in 1-L/A were involved in a project that helped families in developing countries meet their basic needs. Inspired by the true life story of Beatrice Bira of Uganda, 1-L students took action and participated in project "Chores for Change". With the help of family sponsors, students raised $357 to donate to Heifer International for the purchase of farm animals that have been distributed to poor families across the globe.
With careful consideration of the benefits that each type of animal could provide to the receiving families, 1-L students used the funds raised to donate a water buffalo, pig, and a goat. Geography: Wants and NeedsAs students become familiar with the geographical landforms of the earth, they begin to consider how the earth's resources effect our needs and wants. Students work together to deepen their understanding of Mother Earth through multi-sensory and collaborative learning experiences.

LandformsStudents studied different kinds of landforms to better understand the physical features of the earth's surface. Students displayed their knowledge of particular land forms characteristics through the creation of a clay models.
