• Literacy

The fifth grade curriculum follows the balanced literacy approach to the teaching of reading and writing. In this approach reading and writing are combined to support student learning comprehensively.  Students read and write fiction and nonfiction pieces that encompass all content areas. Instruction occurs in whole class, small group and individual settings.

    Digital Literature Circles
Students practice positive speaking and listening skills while they work collaboratively in self selected book clubs with a common theme of historical fiction.  Through a series of defining roles, 5-L students use a digital literature circle platform to prepare for classroom discussions.
