Class Trip: Liberty Science Center
Fox Meadow's 5th grade students took a trip to the Liberty Science Center. Students explored the center's many exhibits and experiences.
May 18th was quite a day for the students and trout of 5-L. After 10 months of raising our little fish from eggs to fingerlings, we released approximately 70 healthy trout into the cool clean stream waters at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. It was an outing filled with fishing, hiking, journaling, painting, and BBQ! The day was certainly one to remember.
Students Support Scarsdale Middle School Student
in Fundraising Project to Benefit Children in Pain (CHIP)
When a former Fox Meadow student, came to the 5-L classroom to talk to students about a special project she was initiating to help children in India through the organization CHIP, the children immediately took interest. The now Scarsdale Middle School Student who was working on her Silver Award in Girl Scouting, showed organization, leadership, and dedication to making improvements in a community dear to her. With 5-L students at her side a plan was immediately put into motion to start a bake sale to raise funds for CHIP. The students put their GEC skills into action and quickly separated into teams. The advertising team wrote a pitch, scripted and created a commercial, and saturated the school with flyers advertising the coming bake sale and purpose. The bakers and refreshment team took action as well, preparing the most scrumptious delights for a successful bake sale. All the while the donation team created beautiful boxes and a sign ready to receive cash and spent mornings in the front of school waiting patiently for donors.
There is no doubt our former Fox knew where to go when she needed a strong team of support. Who says you can't go home? Once a Fox, always a Fox!
Museum of Modern Art
As a culminating activity to Learning to Look an art education tour was taken
through the Museum of Modern Art
Learning to Look parent coordinators challenged students' recall with a game similar to Hasbro's game, Clue. Students were presented with samples of paintings they studied over the past six years. The object of the game was to determine "who" created the painting, "what" the painting was named, and "which" art movement it referenced. Student groups worked together in small groups and then as a whole class to deduce the correct answers.

Preparing for a journey can be difficult, but when you can only bring ten items packing can be more than challenging. What do you value? What do you need? What do you want? Students taking on the persona of a self-created historical immigrant had just that experience this past week.
Shogi Challenge
Students demonstrate how to play Shogi, which is also known as Japanese Chess.
Our little fishies are getting really big and have begun to resemble their adult relatives in intricate detail. We've been studying them carefully and closely learning about the fascinating body parts that allow them to survive in their habitat and in some ways operate just as a humans.
Students were given a variety of choices that reflected intelligence and interest preferences for their final book club project. Below is a student created game from the novel, The Orphan Of Ellis Island, that requires varying levels of comprehension to make it to the finish.
CLASS ACTS AT THE CLASSICAL CAFE
A helping of local talent and pizza was served at Monday's lunch. Fifth grade students and teachers enjoyed the entertainment.
Investigating Volume
Students create models to learn about the volume of a rectangular solid. From these models, students investigate the concept of formula to determine the volume.
Literature Circles Go Digital
Students practice positive speaking and listening skills while they work collaboratively in self selected book clubs. 5-L students use a digital literature circle platform to prepare for classroom discussions.
Learning to Look : Mobile Creations Unplugged!
Students studied the work of American sculptor, Alexander Calder, who was known as the originator of the mobile. Like Calder, students made kinetic sculptures that were delicately balanced with components that moved in response to air.
WE MADE IT TO THE FINALS!
It was an awesome achievement when we received word from Broadclyst School that our occasion card company, Crazy Cardz, made it to the top 16 finalists in The Global Enterprise Challenge! Ranking high among 250 schools globally got everyone excited. Praised for their creative card(z) and business plan with a low cost margin, Crazy Cardz win was a sweet shocker. Everyone gave a shout out for the group.

Winter Games AKA American Games 2015
Fox Meadow 5th grade students spent the early days of February participating in the annual Fifth Grade American Games. This years theme, Winter Games, allowed students to participate in events that included Curling which is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles.

Student Business Plans are Presented in the Dragon's Den
Over the past two weeks student groups presented their business plans and redesigned prototypes to Fox Meadow teachers along with Science Helping Teacher, Jen Kiley, and Principal Wilson in the Dragon's Den (AKA Shark Tank). Their presentations included financial reports and analysis that showed cost of manufacturing, market reaction, and sales forecasts. Dragons in turn gave reaction to student business plans, product design, and potential market success. County Board of Legislature
To enhance understanding of their study of government, fifth grade students experienced the legislative process first-hand through the County Board's Student Legislature program. Students learned how the committee system works in moving and developing ideas and suggestions into laws that affect the lives of the almost one million residents of Westchester County. Through mock legislative committees and session, students debated and voted on issues that have actually gone before the Board such as cellular use while driving and renovation and restoration of Playland Park.
Public Service Announcements
While studying the United States Constitution and Global Human Rights 5-L students created Public Service Announcements (PSA's). The purpose of our work was to give students creative opportunity to have a voice and take positive action in real-world issues while leveraging the use of digital media to investigate, explore and act on causes of importance to them. Students were challenged to ask brave questions about the issues they saw in their neighborhoods, communities and the world around them. Click the photo to link to PSA's.
